Mini Habits by Stephen Guise - Book Summary

Mini Habits is a book written by Stephen Guise, is a writter, blogger and a researcher, who is expert to teach personal development strategy habits. This book has been sold over 1 million copies and has become the go-to habit formation strategy for many.

This book tells the strategy of making the most popular habit to achieve predictable and incompatible results and also tell us why it is very important to be consistent in our small habits. According to author, most people think that they are the reason for not getting their permanent changes but the problem is not with them, it happen with their strategy.

In this book, author explain, how some smaller habits of any person showing bigger results in their life. Positive habits can multiply your results and success.

This book isn't for eliminating bad habits, though some principles could be useful for breaking habits. Mini Habits is a strategy to create permanent healthy habits. Some categories include : exercise, writing, reading, thinking, positively, meditating, drinking water, eating healthy foods etc.

Habits are a major part of our lives. We all live to our extent with our habits. Some of them are good habits, some bad and some very bad.



Know how to make good habits and stay connected with them. The author does not just give some good suggestions in this book, but also explains how bad habits are controlled and good habits should be adopted more and more.

In this book author also explained about habits that how habits are formed and how it can help us achieve our goals. because most of our life controlled by our habits.

 

     How your brain work with habits

Do you know the feeling of being in autopilot? when we are bathing in morning or brushing our teeth then we do not have to think. What we are doing but why is this? Because we have changed our daily important activities into our habits. We have done so many times that we can do it automatically. Many of our daily activities have been govern by habits. It has often been seen that whenever we are in stress or fatigue, then we start following our habitual behaviors which is our habits. Whether our habits are good or bad, it goes away.

You want you not to repeat bad habits, but its goes away but the good news is that bad habits can be changed too. After all habits are nothing, the way our brain work. The more we use these, the stronger it is and when they are neglected, it will gradually decrease.

 

     Willpower vs Motivation

It is very difficult to make good habits. We start by motivating someone but can not do it for long time. e.g. Inspired by someone, you decide that every morning you will do 100 push-ups and it can happen to a large extent that you owe it to 20 or do it for 3-4 days only and then come back to the old routine.

To make good habits, more Willpower than Motivation is needed.



Motivation is a good thing but we are motivate about those things we like e.g. Holidays, Games etc. but when it comes to cleaning your room, Motivation is not anywhere.

 

     The Strategy of Mini Habits

If you want to achieve a very big goal from the beginning, your Willpower will not accompany you. Like if you want to do 100 push-ups in the first day,, you will not be able to. If you want to do 30 minute Meditation in the first day, you will not able to.

So, its solution is MINI HABITS

Whatever you want to create new habits, start with a small habits. e.g. If you want to make a habit of 100 push-ups daily, start with 5 push-ups. It will also help you with your Willpower. This is Mini Habits. If you want to do Meditation for 30 minutes, start from 1 minute. This time will increase automatically after some days but you do not have to do this for 30 minutes directly from 1 minute, it will increase gradually.

Author give us 8 small steps to aquire minihabits towards big chnages-

  2. Ask WHY
  3. Pick Habit cues
  4. Start small
  5. Track progress
  6. Plan rewards
  7. Pick consistency over quantity
  8. Watch for signs of habit formation

 

     Eight Mini Habit rules

To achieve positive changes in life, small habits must followed by Rules given below-

  1. Never, ever cheat
  2. Be happy with all progress
  3. Reward yourself often, especially after a mini habit
  4. Stay level- headed
  5. If you feel strong resistance, back off and go smaller
  6. Remind yourself how easy this is
  7. Never think a step is too small
  8. Put extra energy and ambition towards bonus reps, not a bigger requirment.

In short - - Mini Habits explains how you can get the most out of the fact that 45% of your behaviour happens on autopilot by setting ridiculously small goals, relying on will power instead of motivation and tracking your progress to live a life that's full of good mini habits.
